An Essential Role in the Global Power Mix
As the world’s need for accessible power grows, coal power plants will continue to be a vital method to meet this demand. However, to limit emissions, it is essential that coal-fired power plants provide maximum efficiency and rely on leading air quality and pollution control technologies. GE’s Smarter, Cleaner Steam Power initiative aims to do just that.
With nearly 900 billion tons of reserves, coal power remains an integral part of the energy mix that includes renewables as well as gas power generation. Today, 40% of the world’s electricity comes from coal power and we predict that amount will decrease only slightly, to 30%, over the next decade.
With this 30% predicted usage, emissions from coal power plants will continue to be a major area of focus. As part of ecomagination, GE is focused on reducing environmental impact, and across all global sources of power generation that countries need to fuel economic development. We are dedicated to ensuring coal power plants are as efficient as possible and to limiting their effects on the environment through innovative emission reduction technologies.

Smarter. Cleaner. Steam Power.
To respond to the power needed worldwide, we have developed a portfolio of Smarter, Cleaner Steam Power technologies to meet the global electricity needs.
Raising the bar on cleaner coal technology
Higher efficiency can lead to both improved economics and reduced greenhouse emissions from coal power. Our ultra-supercritical technologies achieve the highest efficiency rate at a coal-based power plant, delivering 47.5% against the global average of 33%. Each percentage point improvement in efficiency reduces CO2 emissions from coal power plants by 2%.
As a leader in ultra-supercritical steam technology, GE continues to push the limits of our best-in-class steam technology even further. With higher steam parameters and higher efficiency rates, GE is the first to market with advanced ultra-supercritical technology. We call this SteamH.
SteamH can deliver an additional 1.6 percentage points of efficiency beyond the best technology in operation today, driving towards 50% efficiency. For a 1000MW base plant in Asia, this is an economic benefit of $80M in additional value for our customers.
SteamH is based on the proven performance of GE’s ultra-supercritical steam technology that can deliver up to 47.5% efficiency rates -- significantly higher than the global average of 34%. Our steam technology surpasses the benchmarks set by OECD for pressure, temperature and emissions requirements, delivering higher efficiency coal plants with less impact on the environment.
Lower coal power plant emissions means cleaner air
GE is proud to have 80 years of experience and the broadest range of air quality control systems (AQCS) for coal power. Our technology can address all the sources of non-greenhouse gas emissions, like NOx, SOx and particulate matter from any coal-fired power plant. We can meet and exceed the world’s strictest emissions regulations.
Cleaner air means a higher acceptance of coal-fired plants in local communities, and equally important, by lenders and financial institutions–leading to better financing terms for our customers.
Add digital capabilties
What do you get by combining the physical strengths of GE’s coal-fired steam plant technology with our industry-leading digital capabilities powered by Predix? Better performance, greater efficiencies, and improved reliability of existing and future coal power plants.
For example, Asset Performance Management (APM) continuously monitors steam plant equipment health, enabling operations teams to make decisions that enhance plant performance, reduce unplanned downtime and extend plant life with minimal capital investment.
When steam plants are operating in grid demand mode, they are required to ramp-up faster and more often than they were originally designed to—making real-time monitoring especially important.
Our Digital Power Plant software interprets data from more than 10,000 sensors to improve coal-fired steam power plant performance. This leads to a 1.5% increase in efficiency and allows for 5% less unplanned downtime and 3% lower CO2 emissions.
It all adds up
All of this translates to lower operating costs for our customers—up to $80 million in a 1000 MW coal power plant. These lowered costs (and lowered emissions) along with higher efficiency are more attractive to export credit agencies and lenders.
GE is also working with GE Capital Energy Financial Services as well as third parties to fund cleaner energy projects. We also partner with governments and international organizations to identify new funding.
