Rising to the Challenge

The World Energy Outlook foresees Malaysia’s energy demand to almost double between 2015 and 2040, with coal becoming the primary fuel in the country’s energy mix. This fuel landscape will impact the country’s CO2 emissions per capita, (making it three times higher than the Southeast Asian average) but structural changes are expected to help reduce Malaysia’s carbon intensity by 33%.

These structural changes include new, efficient steam power plant developments to support new units. GE answered the call from TNB Janamanjung by taking the lead on the construction of Manjung 4, as well as its power equipment and Air Quality Control Systems (AQCS).

GE supplied the full EPC, 1,080 MW Ultra-Supercritical power plant, including its boiler, steam turbine, generator, as well as a complete set of AQCS.

Reducing the Impact

Manjung 4’s Seawater Flue Gas Desulphurization (SWFGD) system and a Particulate Removal System with Fabric Filter (FF) solution are now in operation, helping the plant to significantly reduce the site’s environmental impact. Designed to treat the complete flue gas, The SWFGD system achieves more than 90% SO2 removal, setting Manjung 4 at 200mg/Nm3—way below World Bank standards. The Fabric Filter equipment, featuring an Optipule™ Pulse-Jet Fabric helps the plant process various coal types.

By choosing GE, TNB Janamanjung is already seeing benefits. The sum of solutions implemented there will lead to a total 4 to 5% emissions reduction compared to previous units, a strong environmental win for the region.
