Internally-rapped ESP Upgrades

Simplify Maintenance; Improve Performance

Internally-rapped precipitators have several design characteristics that limit performance and increase maintenance time and expense. GE has effective improvements to the original design of these units that can increase efficiency and correct the problems found with tumbling hammer ESPs. Some of these issues include:

  • Four-point suspension robs valuable space inside unit and makes it impossible to create smaller electrical sections
  • Plates are suspended from roof which precludes top access for repairs
  • Internal hammer rapping offers little flexibility, and moving parts can't be observed or repaired during operation

GE's precipitator upgrades add electrical sections, increases plate area up to 30%, uses available space in the unit, gives top access for much easier maintenance, and includes roof-mounted rappers that can be adjusted individually for maximum rapping effectiveness. Rigid discharge electrodes and rugged ESP-1 or ESP-3 collecting plates give reliability and long service life.


  • Increased collecting surface area means better performance
  • Greater precipitator efficiency due to enlarged treatment zone size
  • Access to internal components is greatly improved
  • Inspections and maintenance can be performed from the top and bottom of the unit
  • Rigid discharge electrodes won't snap or burn through like flat ribbons or spiral electrodes
  • External rappers allow repair with the unit on-line and operating
  • Rappers adjust individually to strike as needed with variable intensity
  • No moving parts inside precipitator reduces maintenance
  • Additional electrical sections minimize the effects of sparking
  • Precise alignment can be maintained
