Slurry DryingDue to the large number of agricultural enterprises, the groundwater in Spain is heavily polluted with pig slurry. GE has helped one company alleviate this problem by providing modules to produce the energy for the disposal of the slurry in several different forms. The pig slurry is collected and fermented. The resulting biogas is combined with natural gas and used for the generation of electricity and heat by GE’s Jenbacher gas engines. The waste heat causes the water to evaporate, and the nitrogen is separated, dried and marketed as a fertilizer throughout Europe. The cooling water of the engine and the fuel gas mixture provide hot water for the evaporation process; the hot exhaust is used to dry the fertilizer; and the required electricity is supplied by the generator of the GE’s Jenbacher module. Any electricity not required by the plant is fed into the public grid, creating revenue. |
