Announcing the world’s first two-stage turbocharged gas engine – GE’s new Jenbacher J624. Responding to the growing global demand for high-efficiency, simple-cycle power generation, GE introduces the next generation turbocharged gas engine. Applying proven technology from the automotive industry, the new engine provides significantly higher output, increased efficiency, and is particularly well-suited for operation in hot environments and in combined heat and power (CHP) applications.

An unparalleled level of engineering excellence

The new Jenbacher J624 2-stage Turbocharged gas engine offers you significant advantages, particularly in the area of multiple engine power plants for independent power generation and CHP solutions.

In today’s marketplace, improved efficiency is critical; due to both the competitive cost of electricity and the reduction of CO2 emissions in a carbon-constrained environment. The new J624 2-stage Turbocharged—developed by ABB for GE’s gas engine—achieves approximately 10 percent higher output, increasing from 4 megawatts (MW) to 4.4 MW, and offers an electrical efficiency of 46.5 percent, an increase of about 2 percent.

History GE Energy’s Jenbacher gas engine division has over 50 years of experience in developing and manufacturing gas engines for all types of gaseous fuels. Over its history of gas engine innovation, GE’s development program has continually driven output and efficiency for all versions to new records.

First introduced to the market in 1988, the type 6 gas engine originally came in a 12- or 16-cylinder version. Ten years later, the type 6 20-cyclinder version with an electrical output of 2.8 MW was introduced. This version was developed based on the exceptional performance of the type 3 20-cylinder version. At the time, the 20-cylinder type 6 engine was the first high-speed gas engine and the smallest package in the 3 MW output range. Since then, engine performance has continuously improved on the type 6 family. Based on the step-by-step development program, the F-version was created, which provided full output and efficiency over a wide range of ambient conditions.

In 2007, GE introduced the world’s first 24-cylinder gas engine for commercial operation. Underlining the product line’s technology excellence with gas engines, the 24-cylinder engine was built on almost 20 years of experience with the type 6 engine family, which now has an installed fleet of more than 2,000 units.

In June 2010, GE introduced the next generation of gas engines with advanced turbocharger technology. The new J624 2-stage Turbocharged gas engine significantly pushes out the gas engine operating range, and maintains full output and efficiency at high ambient temperatures and high elevation.
