Max-9™ ESFF

Max-9™ Electrostatic Fabric Filter

The Max-9 Electrostatic Fabric Filter is a dust collection technology that combines discharge electrodes and fabric filters in the same casing to provide the highest collection efficiency (99.999%) while operating at a 60 to 80% lower system pressure drop. The Max-9 ESFF is fundamentally an electrostatic precipitator/pulse-jet baghouse hybrid, employing high voltage discharge electrodes to charge particulate, but with fabric filters instead of collecting plates in the casing.

The technology was developed through a partnership of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Southern Research Institute (SRI) to address fine particulate and the need for a compact footprint. The Max-9 ESFF provides collection efficiencies an order of magnitude higher than those achieved by either the best fabric filters or precipitators currently on the market, with demonstrated efficiency of 99.999%.

GE is the exclusive licensee of this EPA-patented technology, providing improvements over the original test design and commercialized for full-scale applications. The extremely high operating air-to-cloth ratio allows a small footprint, making them easier to fit in the limited space of plant environments. Additionally, the low pressure drop attribute is allowing many sites to replace less efficient particulate control devices with the MAX 9 ESFF without replacing expensive ID fans. Systems can be configured to help provide compliance with Industrial Boiler MACT, fine particulate reduction, and with PM1.0 and mercury abatement regulations as the Max-9 removes fine particulate precursors and sorbents such as carbon and lime. Potential configurations are:
  • Slipstream units to augment an existing dust collector
  • Polishing units behind an existing precipitator, baghouse, or scrubber
  • Stand-alone as a high efficiency replacement for an inefficient precipitator or multiclone

Benefits

  • 60-80% reduction in static pressure across fabric filters compared to conventional baghouses
  • Combines established, proven technologies to achieve unprecedented efficiency
  • Designed to be used alone or in conjunction with SOx and mercury control systems
  • Scalable design permits rapid installation and short outage duration
  • Offers 80-90% reductions in sub-micron particulate matter emissions
  • Smaller footprint than any other collector technology
  • Allows operation at high air-to-cloth ratios

The Max-9 Electrostatic Fabric Filter is designed to help if you:

  • Want to switch to low-cost fuels, but can't due to emissions problems
  • Are planning for particulate matter or mercury regulation requirements
  • Are running a borderline precipitator or baghouse that needs more efficiency
  • Exceed emissions limits at startup or shutdown
  • Are operating a de-rated unit due to emissions
  • Are planning to increase production
  • Have failed a stack test
