Steam Properties Utility Gives "Unexpected Error" When Started

This Topic Applies to:
GateCycle Software:Version 5.22.000r
Operating Systems:All Operating Systems
Module:vb_steam.exe (version 2.00.0029)
Keywords:Steam Utility, Steam Calculator, Steam Properties
Symptoms

When you select Utilities / Steam Properties or press the Steam button in an Equipment dialog box, the steam properties utility fails and reports an "Unexpected Error." The GateCycle software itself is unaffected by this.

Cause

The steam properties utility released with GateCycle version 5.22 uses a later version of the operating system's Common Dialog Control file comdlg32.ocx than was distributed on the GateCycle version 5.20 release CD. GateCycle software patches do not include operating system components such as this dialog control file due to the complexities of patching a computer's operating system.

Resolution

If you experience this problem, you should check the version of comdlg32.ocx your system is using. The file comdlg32.ocx is located in your system's C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ folder, unless you are using Microsoft® Windows NT®, where the file is located in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder.

After locating the file, right-click on the filename; then select Properties from the contextual menu. In the dialog box, click the Version tab. Your dialog control file's version number appears. This error occurs when vb_steam.exe version 2.00.0029 is used in conjunction with the OCX dialog control file version 5.00.3714 (which is the version distributed with GateCycle software version 5.2), but the problem may also exist with OCX dialog control file versions prior to 5.01.4319.

Do not replace the OCX dialog control file if its version is higher than 5.01.4319.

Before replacing the dialog control file file, ensure:
1. All applications are closed.
2. The comdlg32.ocx file is between versions 5.00.3714 and 5.01.4319.
3. You have made a backup copy of comdlg32.ocx.
