Grid Reports Fail to Initialize Database

Symptoms

When generating a GateCycle grid report ("case," "stream" or "model"), the following error reports:

  • Failed to initialize the database engine. Please reinstall DAO version 3.0, Aborting.

or in versions later than 5.20:

  • Failed to initialize Jet Database Engine

GateCycle software version 5.20 then terminates incorrectly. Physically reinstalling the Data Access Objects (DAO) from the GateCycle software CD does not help. In later versions, the resulting behaviors may vary, but the application does not close automatically.

Cause

There may be a backward compatibility issue in the Microsoft® Foundation Classes operating system file MFC42.DLL version 4.21.7022. This version of MFC42.DLL loads DAO version 3.5 components. GateCycle software is designed to use DAO version 3.0 components, and the GateCycle installation program installs only the files necessary to support GateCycle and DAO version 3.0.

When the 4.21.7022 version of MFC42.DLL tries to load a GateCycle feature that requires DAO components, it tries to load a 3.5 version of the component. Since it is not there, the error message shown above appears. GateCycle's installation software did not install 4.21.7022 version of MFC42.DLL. It may have been installed by another application's installation process, either before or after the GateCycle software was installed, but the GateCycle installation process does not replace newer versions of MFC42.DLL with older versions.

Resolution

Microsoft has fixed this problem in later versions of MFC42.DLL. There are two possible resolutions:

1. Recommended: Replace MFC42.DLL Download mfc42dll.zip below, extract it to a temporary directory and copy the two files (MFC42.DLL and MSVCRT.DLL) to your Microsoft Windows® system directory located at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\. If you are using Microsoft Windows NT®, the system directory is located at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.

Note: These are core operating system files and you should perform this upgrade procedure like a normal application installation, shutting down all applications, including the Microsoft Windows System Agent if it is running. If you receive sharing violation errors, another application is using the files. Close all applications and try again.

Download this version upgrade only if you have confirmed the MFC42.DLL to be 4.21.7022 (select the file, right-click for the contextual menu, select Properties, and check the Version tab).

2. Install DAO 3.5.
Since this is a large installation, we have not provided this option on this site.
