Today, as a key member of Team CANDU, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy Canada, Inc. participates in the continued development of the CANDU industry with a dedicated focus to support CANDU New Build. Looking to the future, we will be expanding with the introduction of new fuel products for the next generation of CANDU plants. This will involve the addition of a new manufacturing line for low enriched fuel in Peterborough, which will be very similar to existing operations. This is expected to be a smooth transition as buildings are already in place and the new manufacturing processes will be largely the same as today. As with the introduction of anything new, it is important that no new impacts result that significantly affect the surrounding community and environment. This is carefully being studied through an Environmental Assessment (EA). An EA is an important means of ensuring the proper oversight and control of any such project and is a recognized way of identifying environmental impacts and their significance. We invite you to take a few moments to read through the following sections of this web site outlining the EA process we are currently engaged in. Use the links in the right hand column to navigate to the other sections of this site. For more information on the EA and associated project contact Paul Desiri at GE Hitachi, 748-8253. Additional information can also be found on the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission web page for this project located here. |
