Hydro Generators & Motor/Generators

Over a Century of Experience

Our generator design process builds on continuous applied research and development focused on improving the analytical methods of performance evaluation. We have more than 100 years of experience designing the world's largest and most technologically advanced generators and motor/generators. We employ world-class engineers and designers with extensive experience in machines ranging from 10 to more than 800 MVA using the ISO 9001 design control procedure.

GE's custom design software, augmented by CAE and CAD technology, explores various design options and generator arrangements. Advanced solid modeling and drafting design tools prevent possible design conflicts. Structural, vibration and heat transfer finite element analysis tools diagnose the mechanical integrity of generator components under the whole spectrum of loading conditions. Electromagnetic finite element programs simulate and analyze transients including the effects of transient rotor motion and inertia, and two- and three-dimensional magnetostatis, electrostatis and magnetodynamic finite element programs perform steady state analysis.

Generators & Motor/Generators

Bulb-Type Generators

GE has a strong background in building large slow-speed horizontal synchronous machines of this type. In such applications, our experience focuses on air-gap stability, distortion control, unbalanced magnetic pull, ventilation, frame stiffness and seal design.

Conventional Generators

Designed for all types of vertical axis applications, conventional generators are installed in locations having a variety of head and flow conditions.

Straflo (Rim-Type) Generators

These types of generators are designed for straight-flow turbine system applications to harness tidal flow effectively for the production of electric power as well as for low head applications.

Motors for Pumped Storage

Many utilities lower system costs by adding pumped storage capacity. In addition to supplying low cost peaking capacity, pumped storage provides spinning reserve to the system. GE has supplied more than 50 units with a total capacity of over 7,400,000 kVA (7,000,000 kW).
