Marine

Gas turbines have been used as marine propulsion systems in naval applications for many years. More recently the fast ferry, cruise ship and LNG carrier markets have also adopted the gas turbine for both propulsion and, in the case of cruise ships, hotel load.

The marine environment represents a unique challenge. Air filtration systems are required to remove vast quantities of salt spray, and occasionally ‘green seas,’ while being constrained by severe space and weight limitations. GE’s Altair products have been providing protection for marine gas turbines since 1968, when they were first introduced as propulsion units, principally on warships.

AltairVega™ Filtration System

The AltairVega three-stage system has been meeting this challenge for 40 years in some of the world’s harshest maritime environments. Today, over 350 marine gas turbines operate with the protection of AltairVega. The unit’s flexible design makes it equally applicable to large ship systems and small luxury yachts. AltairVega is equally suited to diesel and gas turbine applications.

AltairNeptune™ Filtration System

AltairNeptune represents the very latest in inlet protection technology for the marine environment. The system utilizes the familiar three-stage vane/coalescer/vane approach, but represents a superior level of salt and water removal performance compared to traditional systems. Operating at velocities as high as 15 m/s (3000 FPM), the AltairNeptune filtration system allows greater flexibility due to its compact size. The high operating velocity of AltairNeptune allows the system to be more than 50% smaller than conventional three-stage systems.

Salt Removal

Our unique Altair SRS Technology™ process is used throughout both ranges. This ensures that salt is not only captured but also removed from the inlet duct, reducing the possibility of leaching or re-entrainment.
