GE’s technology approach for oil and gas

Despite being sensitive to risk, the oil and gas industry has seen incredible technological strides forward in recent times. Mohammad Ehteshami General Manager of Technology and Engineering Leader has recently joined GE’s Oil & Gas business; his background is in the aviation industry which is well known for its high standards of process rigor needed to achieve performance, reliability and safety. Part of his definition of leadership is “taking calculated risks” and, in this issue of our newsletter, Mohammad discusses the management of those risks as he describes GE’s  approach to oil and gas technology.

Improving productivity through
technological innovation

Accuracy boost from GE’s Sentinel flowmeter

Sentinel, a leading gas flowmeter from GE Sensing, now offers higher flow calibrated accuracy at 0.1%. It is a high-accuracy, multi-path ultrasonic flowmeter specifically geared to the fiscal custody-transfer of natural gas – even at non-ideal conditions when dealing with liquid carry-over and build-up.

From oil to gas in the North Sea

The Brent field, some 500 km North East of Aberdeen, has been a cornerstone of the UK offshore oil and gas industry since its discovery in 1971. Timely upgrading of the gas export compressors to suit the late life requirements of the reservoir is increasing hydrocarbon recovery from the Brent field in the North Sea. The strategy driving initial selection, re-wheeling and subsequent replacement of the compressors is explained. Advances in technology and modelling methods allowed each phase of the development to extend the operational envelope of the machine beyond that previously possible, in a predictable manner. The design, test and offshore installation methodologies and challenges are discussed in the context of brownfield upgrade constraints. The vendor’s rotor-dynamic optimisation of a critical compressor is outlined.

Increasing manufacturing quality and delivery times for high-speed reciprocating compressors

GE’s Oil & Gas business is committed to and focused on becoming the supplier of choice for the high-speed reciprocating compressor market. This achievement can only be realized by delivering on-time, quality products that meet or exceed our customer expectations. Our product portfolio, consisting of the M, H, A, DS, ES, FS and SHMB lines, is one of the most comprehensive offerings in the industry and represents a spectrum of power between 60 and 7,200 HP.

New pipeline work in Spain and Italy

We are pleased to report significant achievements recently with two key players in the European pipeline industry. GE’s Oil & Gas business will supply two gas turbine-driven turbocompressor units to Enagas, the operator of Spain’s gas transportation system, for a new pipeline compression station at Navarra in northern Spain. We will also provide new turbocompressor units and an upgrade of existing equipment to increase the pumping capacity and extend the operating life of the Trans-Tunisian pipeline, which transports gas from Algeria through Tunisia to Sicily, Italy.

New high for compressor performance

GE’s Oil & Gas business has recorded an average 3% operating efficiency increase in our centrifugal compressors for most recent LNG and pipeline applications. This is obviously a tremendous advantage for oil and gas operators, particularly in the LNG sector, who need to increase plant production capacities.
