| SHANGHAI, CHINA - June 12, 2008 : – GE Energy's distributed control system (DCS) was selected for the new supercritical coal-fired Huaneng Hainan East Power Plant, which when complete will help alleviate power supply shortages in China's Hainan Province driven by strong economic growth in the region. GE's OC 4000™ system will be used to control and protect the boiler, steam turbine and auxiliary devices for two 350-megawatt units. The OC 4000 DCS provides total plant control at a single level, combining a number of applications, ranging from plant-wide distributed control to stand-alone control and protection of specific assets, such as turbines or boilers. Through the system's advanced fault-tolerant and redundant design features, reliable and robust control can be configured to address even the most critical applications. "The order for the Huaneng Hainan East Power Plant is GE's second contract with Huaneng Group for a supercritical DCS unit," according to Brian Palmer, vice president of GE Energy's optimization and control business. "Supercritical coal units can lower heat rate by 2.5 percent when compared with subcritical units. Comparatively, they save fuel and energy consumption, reduce environmental contaminants, such as CO2 emissions, by 15 percent and reach higher generating efficiencies of up to 45 percent." The Hainan Province's increased economic growth has caused power supply shortages. The region's power demands are predicted to increase 15.5 percent annually through 2010 and it is projected that 17.5 GW will be needed by that time1. This facility will have a generating capacity of approximately 4.2 GW. The power plant will employ high efficiency, energy saving and emissions control systems, with the DCS providing overall control and quick delivery and commissioning cycle times to maximiz e the customer's economic benefit. The units will be manufactured at GE's Shanghai facility and shipped to Hainan by the end of June 2008, with planned installation completion by August 30 and commercial operation in December 2008.
