GE, China's NGC To Jointly Develop Wind Turbine Gearbox

NANJING, PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA - August 30, 2006 :- GE Energy and Nanjing High Speed & Accurate Gear Company (NGC) today signed an agreement to jointly develop gearboxes for GE's 1.5-megawatt wind turbines. The agreement makes NGC one of GE's leading component suppliers in the wind energy business.

"By integrating the experience and skills of both companies, we will expand our capability to meet the needs of customers in the rapidly growing renewable energy industry worldwide," said Steve Bertamini, Chairman and CEO of GE China.

"The agreement also supports ecomagination, GE's corporate initiative to address challenges such as the need for cleaner, more efficient sources of energy. Increasing the efficiency and performance of wind turbines is a key part of the ecomagination effort," he added.

The gearbox is a critical component of the GE 1.5-megawatt wind turbine, which is among the most widely used megawatt-class wind turbines in the global wind industry. Nearly 5,000 of these machines have been installed or committed for projects worldwide.

GE will contribute Six Sigma quality processes and technical consulting to the design process of the gearbox. As part of the agreement, NGC senior management will attend training sessions at GE's leadership development center in Crotonville, New York.

"This cooperation with GE will help NGC enhance our position as a leading supplier of high-quality gearboxes for a variety of industries," said Hu Yueming, Chairman and President of NGC. "With NGC's experience and expertise in the manufacturing of high quality and accurate gears and GE's advanced technology, the partnership will benefit not only the parties involved, but also the customers and the gear industry of China as a whole."
