GE Energy Aeroderivative Site in the Netherlands Receives Prestigious Health and Safety Award

HOUSTON, TEXAS (July 29, 2005) — GE Energy’s aeroderivative service center in Rheden, the Netherlands, recently received the prestigious Global Star award for health and safety excellence. The Rheden depot is the first GE Energy site in the Netherlands and the 58th GE-wide site to receive this distinction.

The Global Star is an internal GE awards program that was modeled after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). The Global Star program establishes performance-based criteria, such as the GE Health and Safety Framework and injury and illness rates, for a managed safety and health program.

The GE Health and Safety Framework consists of 21 elements, including chemical management and high-risk operations, which set 550 global expectations for the GE sites. GE's Global Star program requirements go beyond OSHA's VPP and have been considered a global model for industries by other corporations.

The Rheden facility was assessed against these criteria and also underwent a rigorous on-site audit by certified GE Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) professionals under the guidance of GE's Corporate Environmental Programs. Nearly all employees at the Rheden site were involved in either preparation for or in response to the audit. In addition, approximately 15 percent of the employees were directly involved in either preparation for or in response to the audit as "element owners" and more than 50 percent were directly involved as EHS team members.

"The entire GE Energy aeroderivative family congratulates the Rheden facility on earning the impressive Global Star award. The teamwork of the people at the Rheden depot was instrumental in the facility earning this award, which sets the highest standards in health and safety," said Rick Stewart, president of GE Energy's aeroderivative division.

The Rheden depot is the Center of Excellence for the LM1600, LM2500, LM2500+ and LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbines. It is the first GE Energy site to be honored with the Global Star award in the past three years. GE Energy now has a total of 39 sites in either the VPP or Global Star Health and Safety Excellence programs.

During the fourth quarter of 2004, the Rheden facility became the first GE Energy site to receive the new GE Energy Quality Cup award for having the lowest cost of quality in the business.

GE Energy's aeroderivative division is a leading supplier of aeroderivative gas turbines, gas-fueled reciprocating engines, packaged generator sets and diesel engines for industrial and marine applications. The company provides power-generating equipment to utilities, industries and marine fleets throughout the world. It is also the world's largest and most experienced aeroderivative gas turbine service provider.
