GE Energy Supplied Rental Power for World Golf Championship in Ireland ATLANTA, GEORGIA. (October 8, 2004) While many of the world's best golfers provided the power off the tee, GE Energy supplied the rest of the power for the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship held in Ireland, Sept. 30-Oct. 3. Many of golf's top stars competed in this prestigious tournament, with Ernie Els of South Africa emerging as this year's winner. Prize money totaled $7 million, the largest purse for a golf tournament in Europe in 2004. Through its rentals division, GE Energy supplied 22 generator sets that delivered approximately 4,000 kilowatts of temporary power and eight heat-pump chillers that provided more than 1,000 kilowatts of temporary heating and cooling. In addition, GE provided 65 air-handling units that distributed the heating and air conditioning to the welcome pavilion, the main village, corporate hospitality tents, media tents, catering operations and players and caddies lounges. GE also supplied 24 mobile lighting towers to illuminate the greens as they were cut each tournament day before dawn. They also were used to light the temporary car parks. Each tower had four 1,000-watt metal halide lamps, which means GE supplied a total of 96,000 watts of lighting. The towers are environmentally friendly, with ultra-quiet operation and special containment features to ensure no fuel or oil was discharged onto the course. Shipment of most of the GE equipment began on Sept. 10 and the timing of the delivery and installation was critical. Any delays could have resulted in a chain reaction that could have caused major problems at the beginning of the event. GE Energy was awarded the contract through the International Federation of PGA Tours. Earlier this year, GE supplied temporary power for the Irish Open in Baltray and the European Open at the K Club outside of Dublin, home of the 2006 Ryder Cup. The company also provided temporary and backup power services for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. "We are very pleased that our technology continues to be selected for some of the world's outstanding sporting events, such as the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship," Ricardo Artigas, president of energy services for GE Energy. "It is testimony to the reliability of our products and to the expertise that our service team has displayed in numerous projects worldwide." The tournament site, Mount Juliet Conrad in County Kilkenny, is one of Europe's great country estates, covering 1,500 acres of woodlands. Renowned through the centuries for its hunting and fishing, a new dimension was added in 1991 with the opening of a Jack Nicklaus-designed championship golf course.
