GE Energy Enhances Pipeline Stability with Integrated Turbine Compressor Controls Upgrade

HOUSTON, TEXAS (September 23, 2004) — GE Energy announced today that it has secured the contract and initiated work to retrofit fifteen gas turbine-compressor stations for Turkmenistan Natural Gas Company (Turkmengaz), the state-owned entity in the Republic of Turkmenistan. The announcement of the contract was made at the Turbomachinery Symposium, September 21-23, in Houston, Texas.

GE Energy's global controls services group, which delivers products and services for optimizing plant and asset performance, will supply integrated turbine and compressor controls to provide enhanced compressor protection and overall pipeline efficiency at the Pustynnaya, Ilyaly, Karakumskaya, Shatlyk, and Deryalyk boosting stations along the Central Asia Centre natural gas pipeline.

Utilizing GE Energy's extensive background in mechanical hydraulic controls, the company developed a customized software solution built on the Woodward™ Atlas™ with GE Fanuc VersaMax® digital control platform. GE Energy's Integrated Turbine Compressor Control (ITCC) will incorporate the turbine and compressor controls with sophisticated anti-surge protection, enabling improved turbine reliability and increased compressor capacity with minimized risk of surge.

Additional scope for the project includes engineering support for the pipeline stations, automated compressor start-stop sequencing, compressor station automation to enable remote monitoring and operation of all compressor trains across the pipeline, and fire and gas detection to alert operators of fire through the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) screens.

"GE Energy's ITCC utilizes patented algorithms that provide superior protection against surge, allowing our customers to maximize flow and minimize process upset, in one, integrated control system," said Ricardo Artigas, president, energy services, GE Energy. "Our continued commitment to the advancement of compressor controls technology enables our customers to increase the return on their investment, now and into the future."

The Turkmenistan Natural Gas Company (Turkmengaz) is managed by the Ministry of Oil and Gas and controls gas extraction, production, and transportation in the Republic of Turkmenistan. It operates a number of compressor stations to gather natural gas from fields in the south and transport the resource to Northern Turkmenistan for further export.

GE Energy's global controls services business provides custom-designed solutions for turbine generator and compressor controls, excitation control, and plant-wide systems for customers located around the world. Optimizing performance for turbines from a variety of equipment manufacturers, GE's solutions are focused on enhancing our customers operating revenue and providing tangible bottom-line benefits.
