GE Energy to Supply Three Large-Scale Hydro Turbines for Pubugou Hydropower Station in China Plant to Help Meet Country's Growing Energy Needs BEIJING, CHINA (September 14, 2004) GE Energy has received a contract of approximately RBM 307 million Yuan (US$37 million) to supply three hydro turbines, additional equipment and services for a new hydropower plant that will have a significant role in helping to meet China's rapidly growing power requirements. The Pubugou Hydropower Station, located along the Dadu River in Sichuan Province, is the fifth largest hydropower station in China and the biggest on-going project in Sichuan, with a total installed capacity of 3,300 megawatts. The Pubugou hydropower station will supply electricity primarily for the Sichuan power grid. The owner and operator of the new plant will be GuoDian Dadu River Hydro Development Ltd. of Chengdu. The Chengdu Hydroelectric Investigation and Design Institute is the architecture engineer for the project. "This project reinforces our on-going, strategic relationship with China and the GuoDian Group," said Steve Fludder, CEO of GE Energy China. "We are pleased to support the GouDian Group and China's energy industry with our latest designs in large-scale hydropower technology." Under a contract signed July 16, 2004, GE will design, manufacture and supply three 560-megawatt Francis hydro turbines for the project. The contract also covers valves, spare parts, special tools, supervision of the installation process, and technical training. The turbines will be supplied by GE Hydro Asia from its manufacturing facility in Xiaoshan, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. The first GE turbine-generator set is scheduled to begin commercial service in November of 2008, the second in July of 2009 and the third by March of 2010. GE has been involved in the delivery of 24,500 megawatts of hydropower equipment in China (including its acquisition in 2003 of Kvaerner Hangfa) and is a major participant in the Three Gorges Project. GE has extensive, worldwide experience with hydro turbines up to 700 megawatts. "These large-scale hydro turbines produced by our GE Hydro Asia operation represent a significant milestone in our plan to bring GE's global hydro technology and experience to our design and manufacturing facility in Hangzhou," said Fludder. "Along with our local platforms and partnerships serving the combined-cycle, oil and gas, wind energy, and transmission and distribution segments, this milestone for our hydropower business strengthens our commitment to supporting the growth of China's energy infrastructure."
