GE to Uprate Turbines at Vattenfall Hydropower Station in Northern Sweden MONTREAL, CANADA (August 18, 2004) GE Energy has been selected by Vattenfall AB for an uprate project at the Messaure hydropower station on the Lule River in Sweden that will result in increased output and efficiency, GE reported today at HydroVision 2004. Vattenfall is one of Europe's largest power generators, and accounts for more than 20% of the electricity sales in the Nordic region, with most of the power generated by hydro and nuclear plants. The Messaure plant is located 30 kilometers east of Jokkmokk in northern Sweden. GE Energy will provide new runners and will completely refurbish two Francis hydro turbines at the plant. Following the uprate project, plant output is expected to increase from 142.3 to 152.5 megawatts, with an increase in weighted efficiency of nearly two percent. The Messaure project marks the first application of GE Energy's proactive runner replacement initiative. The first runner will be manufactured at GE Energy's facilities in Lachine, Canada and the second runner will be manufactured by Inepar Energia SpA of Brazil, a joint venture of GE Energy. The turbine refurbishment work will be done in Sweden. Vattenfall Service Nord is a local partner for the installation phase of the project. Equipment for the first unit upgrade will be shipped by the end of June 2005, with the second unit equipment to be shipped a year later. The first unit is scheduled to return to commercial operation by the end of October 2005, followed one year later by the second unit. "We are pleased that Vattenfall, one of our most important customers, has selected our technology for this major uprate project," said Per Svenkvist, plant manager for GE Energy (Sweden) AB.
