Turbine Upgrades by GE Energy Boost Performance of Hydro Plant in Norway MONTREAL, CANADA (August 18, 2004) Recent upgrades of two hydro turbines by GE Energy have boosted the output and efficiency of the Mauranger Hydropower Plant in Mauranger, Norway, GE reported at HydroVision 2004. The plant is owned by Statkraft SF of Oslo, the largest power producer in Norway. Under a contract of US$2.75 million, GE upgraded two six-jet, vertical Pelton turbines, including the supply of two new runners. The project also included the upgrading of six injectors and six annular valves for each turbine, and a model test of the upgraded units. The equipment was completely installed and commissioned by the end of May, with unit 2 resuming commercial service on May 28 and unit 1 on May 29. Following the upgrade, the power output capability of each turbine has been increased from 115 to 134 megawatts. At maximum output, the efficiency has been increased seven percent, which surpasses the contract guarantees. GE Energy's facility in Trondheim, Norway conducted the laboratory model testing for the project, while a GE site in Kjeller handled the model test evaluation, CFD analyses, new parts designs, and modification of the wheel pit cover. Projec management, manufacturing of the new runners, refurbishment of all parts and site work were coordinated from a GE Energy facility in Soerumsand, Norway. GE Energy's hydro operations in Norway, formerly Kvaerner Energy, have supplied more than 90% of all hydropower turbines in the country. Statkraft, a state-owned power utility, has an installed hydropower generating capacity of approximately 10,280 megawatts, accounting for one-third of Norway's total installed hydropower capacity. The company has a history of innovation in hydropower production that stretches back to the early 1900s, and today it remains at the industry cutting edge.
