Dominion Selects New GE Power Systems Remote DLN Tuning Service to Improve Power Availability

First Offering from GE’s New Remote Services Center

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (December 9, 2003) — GE Power Systems today announced that Dominion Resources, Inc. is the first to sign a long-term technology-sharing agreement for GE’s Remote DLN (Dry Low NOx) Tuning Services. A long-standing GE customer and one of the nation’s largest energy producers, Dominion will be installing remote tuning capability across its entire fleet, which consists of 30 GE F-Class gas turbine generators. The Remote DLN Tuning Service is the first of several offerings to be available from GE’s new Remote Services Center in Atlanta, Ga.

“GE’s new continuous remote combustion tuning service represents a significant evolution in turbine service technology,” comments Steve Rowe, general manager of GE Power Systems’ environmental services group. “The system provides 24/7 insight, allowing GE to remotely monitor and tune the combustion system performance, without an on-site presence, in just a few hours - a significant improvement over the traditional cycles of two to three days. As a result, power producers will be able to tune their units more frequently, achieving greater performance and operational flexibility throughout the year,” concludes Rowe.

Dry Low NOx combustion systems reduce pollutants from gas turbines and require periodic tuning to account for changes in ambient conditions, fuel conditions and normal component wear.

The Remote DLN tuning service is the first of five offerings to be provided by GE Power Systems’ new Remote Service Center, which leverages GE’s existing Global Operations Center to collect and manage the required performance data. A select group of highly-experienced, remote-certified GE field engineers analyze the data and provide expert tuning and diagnostics, typically within hours of first noticing a downward performance trend. GE Power Systems’ Operations Center currently monitors operational data from over 1,000 generating units worldwide, providing much of the infrastructure needed to implement the Remote Service Center offerings.

The Remote Services product portfolio is being expanded to include Control Diagnostics, Excitation Diagnostics, Turbine Balancing and Performance Diagnostic Services. These services enable customers to quickly and cost-effectively augment their operating staff with on-demand expert services.

Dominion and GE Power Systems have structured a technology sharing agreement, which will provide Dominion simultaneous access to the continuous data feed being gathered for the Remote DLN tuning. This will help improve the efficiency of the entire combustion process. Dominion is the first customer to take advantage of the data sharing capability this technology provides.

“Dominion has long recognized the value of monitoring combustion parameters and was investigating fleet wide application of this type of equipment. The timing to integrate GE’s technology across our fleet worked great. Having real-time access to the continuous data enables us to take a more proactive approach to maintaining the seasonal availability, improving fuel flexibility and extending the life of our assets. Dominion is committed to maintaining a clean environment and GE’s Remote DLN Tuning Service assists us in meeting our commitments,” comments Paul White, operations and maintenance manager at Dominion.
