If I am traveling, how often do I return home? Do I pay for my own travel expenses?Opportunities to return home depend on the job assignment. On international assignments, you usually return home for one week after three months in some locations, and after one year in others. On domestic assignments, job permitting, you may receive a weekend home about every three weeks. These "home leaves" are in addition to your company vacation benefits. Usually you have time at home in between jobs. GE pays for travel expenses. How will I be evaluated throughout my training? You are evaluated through written exams, oral exams, "hands-on" practical exams and by your overall professionalism during the training program. Tests are designed to measure your knowledge of the material covered during each major module. Feedback from other Field Engineers who observed your performance during the field assignment segment of your training is also included in your evaluation. Your evaluation is sent to your reporting manager, to provide the information required to successfully place you in your first field assignment. What is it like to be on a field assignment?Field assignments are fast-paced and exciting. Field Engineers function in many different roles depending on the type of job. You may act as a project manager for a large maintenance inspection or installation, as a technical advisor supporting a customer outage, or as a consultant providing solutions to customers during a forced outage. Field Engineers interact with personnel from all levels of both GE and the customer's organization, often including the CEO of a utility. The average workday is typically longer in the field, but you are rewarded with additional compensation. As field engineering is a round-the-clock activity, some night shift work may also be required. Where might I work on a field assignment?GE has field offices throughout the world. Field offices dispatch the next available Field Engineer with the appropriate skill set to support a customer request. Jobs are located at customer facilities. Customers range in size from large utilities with multiple turbines to small industrial companies such as paper mills with a single turbine unit. Large maintenance inspections require several GE Field Engineers to be on site. However, you may find yourself working alone with the customer's personnel to solve a specific problem. Frequent changes in location and role responsibility keep a Field Engineer's job both exciting and challenging. Can my family travel with me?Sometimes, depending on the job. For short-term assignments, GE does not pay their expenses. For long-term assignments, GE assesses each situation on an individual basis depending on the accommodations available at the assigned site. In situations where family travel is feasible, with approval from a responsible manager, GE pays travel expenses to and from the job site. |
